“I would like to tell you a short tale — relating to Africa and Puerto Rico.
As you may already know, this garden was put together by Iris, along with the help of some members as well as some volunteers.
She made it with the intention that this garden may serve as a memory to the Africans who were taken to Puerto Rico as slaves.
The African slaves would make spears to protect themselves from wars, as well as for hunting animals and fish.
Iris wanted to make a few spears so that they could be placed in the garden as decorations. Of course, I helped some as well, and as you can see, here are a few.
We have a saying in Puerto Rico, it says “Curiosity killed the cat”. I mention this because I actually didn’t make them out of metal. This was because we have many visitors, which include both children and adults, and because they are often touched, and we did not want anyone getting cut by them.
Because of this, I used plastic instead. I used plastic from milk jugs, plastic from detergent jugs. Between Iris and I, we painted them.”
