Mending is a reflection on identity, language, and memory. Through conversations, poetry, and personal experience, the film traces a journey of searching for self between cultures and languages. As memories shift and meanings change, the act of writing becomes a way to hold things together —to mend what feels fragmented.
What the Body Keeps, the Hands Undo by Lamont Nathaniel Gibson
Explores the act of mending, both physical and emotional, through an intimate, process-driven lens. Centered on the careful washing of a pink rug as a gesture of renewal, the film weaves together archival voicemails and childhood photographs from the artist’s family, layering fragments of everyday communication with visual traces of the past. These materials form a textured meditation on memory, distance, and connection. As the rug is cleaned and restored, the film reflects on repair as a ritual. A way of tending to what is worn, preserving what remains, and finding quiet resilience in acts of care.

Dear Mom: I thought about all the work you’ve put in over the years, all the ways you’ve shown love, tapped into truths, embraced humanity. I thought about all the ways you’ve encouraged me to show up and dance and laugh and be free. I think about our fish ancestors, and Aunt Judy, and the abundance of complicated but deeply rooted love that you and grandmom committed to over and over and over again. I’m thinking about Cath, and the weight of our collective heartbreak. The world has felt your magic. You carry us all in unimaginable ways, but you do not carry any of this alone. How lucky we are that we’ve belonged to each other since the beginning of time.
