El Bembé Celebration

Saturday November 1st from 2-6pm

It is time for El Bembé! A gathering of friends to celebrate our community-based Augmented and Virtual Reality art project “Places of Power: Las Parcelas and Villa Africana Colobó Garden.” A project of Termite TV Collective & Norris Square Neighborhood Project. Presented by the Philadelphia Latino Arts and Film Festival and Mural Arts Philadelphia.

Come and experience AR/VR installations in two community gardens celebrating African heritage and the West African diaspora in Puerto Rican culture. Project directors Iris Brown of Grupo Motivos / Norris Square Neighborhood Project and Anula Shetty and Michael Kuetemeyer of Termite TV Collective have been facilitating workshops with long-term residents to share the memories and stories of this Latine neighborhood in Norris Square. This year, workshop participants created a collective colcha – a traditional Puerto Rican bedspread/quilt, and shared stories about sewing.

The event also features

• An introductory community activation of Norris Square Neighborhood Projectʻs Archive collection.

• Music by Raíces Boricuas – Johnny & Aida Cruz

Thank you for attending the Build Your Own FM Transmitter Workshop!

We had a great time building our own FM transmitters in a workshop led by Hannah Tardie and Derek Schwartz. If you missed this workshop at Termite TV, you can take the it again at PhillyCAM’s People Powered Media Festival’s Makerspace on Saturday October 25 from 12pm-5pm.  (More details below)

Join us on November 7, from 5-8pm for First Friday at Cherry Street Pier! Check out the work of artists who have participated in the Dunu Camper micro residency at the Open Kitchen Sculpture Garden. Their work ranges from sculpture, paintings, illustrated writings, performance, animation and more. During the month of November, we’ll feature documentation from the Residency over its 3 year span and highlight the work of recent artists. The show is up November 3 to November 30th

Are you interested in creating work for a Termite TV show? Our next Production Meeting will be held on Sunday November 9th at Open Kitchen Sculpture Garden’s brunch potluck from 1pm – 3pm. (2241 N Philip St, Philadelphia, PA 19133) Termite shows are collaboratively produced, collage style TV shows and gallery exhibits which invite multiple contributors to reflect, investigate and explore a theme. We invite you to join us in our process of brainstorming and generating ideas and themes as we plan our next season.

What’s Your Ritual?: Film Screening & Grief Workshop
Let’s come together with our community to share and nurture our relationship with grief and loss. What are your rituals for remembrance?

In collaboration with The Thread, an art and grief collective, The Ghouls Next Door are screening their new horror-comedy film, The Soup. After the film, participants will share their stories and have an opportunity to build their rituals through candle making, a grief phone installation, and other interactive art practices designed to honor memory.
