Driving South from Seattle
Tuesday, October 5, 1999 - 6 AM flight Sitka to Seattle. Mary, Spencer and Ellen take us to the airport, lugging all our crap. Plane doesn't land in Juneau for some weather reason. Seattle at 10:45, get baggage, free meal cuz they didn't have a meal on the plane. Logistics for getting the bus, which the mechanic didn't do anything with because he felt it needed a new engine. No peace of mind with this bus. Camp at Dash Point State Park near Tacoma. Not the nicest campsite.
Wednesday, October 6, 1999 - Editing, finish Life Stories from Sitka Alaska. All day at campsite.
Thursday, October 7, 1999 - Dash Point and still raining. Backing up of show, working on Rockefeller grant. All day rain. Feeling trapped. At night smoke some dope dope. Strange walk down to the bay in dark.
Friday, October 8, 1999 - Finally leave Dash Point, still raining. Seemed like a good number of more permanent, down-on-their-luck people living there. Go back to Safeway mall to pick up photos and photocopy, package and mail off all the grant crap to PCA and Rockefeller and send tapes back to DUTV. Several hours in the strip mall. Head south to Oregon. Reach Longview, WA at the border. The luxury of Hudson Manor Inn motel.
Saturday, October 9, 1999 - Changing the oil turns out to be an all day ordeal. Leaking oil tank so redrain the oil, insert new washer, pour in oil again. Leave Longview to Trojan Park, past Ranier, site of a no-longer operational nuclear power plant. Circus tent dance in homage to end of millennium. Drive on I-5 till late, stop at rest area before Grants Pass, OR.
Sunday, October 10, 1999 - Driving 199. Bus troubles begin in Cave Junction, OR - starter won't start. Luckily, on hill, rolling start. Drive to Century City, reach California, Pacific Ocean, to 101 South. Stop by beach. Drive. Starter troubles continue. Reach Redwood River Resort campground 10 pm.
Monday, October 11, 1999 - Excellent private campground - redwoods abound, warm, sunny - near Leggett, CA. Tape up starter cable (looked like the starter cable had been rubbing against the cracked manifold rubbing away the cable casing causing a short circuit?), relaxing swim in pool. Steller's Jay accepts offerings of corn. Visit Confusion Hill with its angled walls and vertiginous sensations. On to San Francisco, arrive at Deborah Perlson's Presidio apartment 10:30 PM.
