Perpetual Repair: Works by Julie Woodard<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n


\nThis collection threads together four years of mourning, curiosity, practice, and play. Stains, holes, and history are stitched behind windowsills, stuffed into birds, woven among ocean waves, and painted above mountain ranges. \u201cMy work reflects a constellation of ways that mending may manifest in our minds, bodies, environment, and communities.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Artifacts from lost loved ones, scraps from strangers, items purchased secondhand, and materials salvaged from the street are all transformed and intertwined. Remnants have been hand-dyed with indigo, screenprinted with pattern, and stretched to new forms. The process is slow, and the repair is perpetual.<\/p>\n

I hope you find a home in this work\u2013something that inspires your own art practice or helps to mend an ache in your heart. Perhaps you\u2019ll be transported to a memory of a walk in the woods, a birdsong that comforts you, or a well-loved stoop down your block. Come and sit for a while. There\u2019s always more mending to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over 20 Termites gathered in the studio last month both in-person and online to ground into the theme of MENDING. This theme will guide and shape experimental and collaborative filmmaking for debut later this spring. Some of us were new and some of us more familiar. We all learned about how mending relates to fabric and textiles as well as within relationships with each other, ourselves, and our memories. The experience concluded with participants hand sewing patches and scraps that will be included in a quilted banner later this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cMending does not mean returning to what was\u2014it means adapting, reconnecting, and continuing forward. Across ecosystems, communities, bodies, hearts, and clothing, repair is real, imperfect, and relational.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Mending is our shared focus for our hive to experiment with creative practices and explore reflections through unique workshops and filmmaking. If you have a session that gathers people around exploratory, interactive, and collaborative ideas, please let us know by submitting to our Fungus Garden. There is $150 stipend plus up to $100 for project supplies budget available per workshop.
