SUMMARY:Mending Workshop with Duwenavue Santé Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Using the technique of embroidery on photos\, mixed with fabric and mixed media collage\, participants will be invited to bring a photo or send one in advance of an image that represents something they would like to mend in their life-a memory\, relationship or experience. Participants individuals pieces will be become part of a collaborative exhibit presented at Cherry Street Pier in May. \n“For Johnson\, a master of the needle trade\, the artistic process is inseparable from the act of survival. The process of mending a textile is identical to the process of mending a life\,” says Johnson. Her work collapses the distance between vocational expertise and communal storytelling\, turning the technical precision of the stitch into a vehicle for social cohesion within a space of her own creation.” \nhttps://www.duwenavuesantejohnson.com/bio# \nhttps://www.instagram.com/sante_artxstitch.art/

SUMMARY:Perpetual Repair - Julie Woodard Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This collection threads together four years of mourning\, curiosity\, practice\, and play. Stains\, holes\, and history are stitched behind windowsills\, stuffed into birds\, woven among ocean waves\, and painted above mountain ranges. My work reflects a constellation of ways that mending may manifest in our minds\, bodies\, environment\, and communities. \nArtifacts from lost loved ones\, scraps from strangers\, items purchased secondhand\, and materials salvaged from the street are all transformed and intertwined. Remnants have been hand-dyed with indigo\, screenprinted with pattern\, and stretched to new forms. The process is slow\, and the repair is perpetual.  \nI hope you find a home in this work–something that inspires your own art practice or helps to mend an ache in your heart. Perhaps you’ll be transported to a memory of a walk in the woods\, a birdsong that comforts you\, or a well-loved stoop down your block. Come and sit for a while. There’s always more mending to do. \nLearn more about Julie’s work & follow along at juiceboxworkshop.com and on socials @juiceboxworkshop.

SUMMARY:Imagining Radical Communication with a DIY FM Transmitter
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nThis is a beginner friendly workshop that will teach attendees how to build a small FM radio transmitter while [hopefully] breaking the assumption that you need an engineering degree to start building your own electronics. In addition to teaching technical skills\, we will be offering a brief political context of radical radio organizing\, past and present\, and how people can start to think about building their own communication networks to keep themselves and their neighbors safe. Understanding radio is a great first step in demystifying networked communication. \nThis workshop requires no previous electronics experience and will consist of actions like hand-placing small components and wires and placing them in a breadboard. Participants will leave with a working radio transmitter that is powerful enough to transmit about one city block and a small publication with instructions for building the circuit and some examples of how radio and DIY networks can be used for radical organizing. Through the process of building electronics and learning together\, we hope that this technology will inspire folks to explore radio as a form of communication and experiment with broadcasting as a radical medium. We hope participants will leave the workshop feeling more empowered to take control of their online presence and potential to broadcast. No prior electronics experience is needed! \nRegister at the eventbrite! \nBios: \nHannah: \nHannah Tardie (they/them) is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work exists as sculpture\, installation\, essays\, event organization\, and performance. Tardie views electronics as rich transferential objects through which we can explore intimacy\, attachment\, and queer relationality. Their work has been shown at La Gaite Lyrique\, SPACE Gallery\, Westbeth Gallery\, One Brooklyn Bridge Park\, Arts\, Letters\, & Numbers\, Vox Populi\, Pig Iron Theatre Company\, and online via websites like Artsy.net\, maps-dna-and-spam\, and p5.js. Tardie has participated in residencies at Arts\, Letters\, & Numbers\, ChaNorth\, Alterworks\, Crit NYC\, and the Media Archaeology Lab (forthcoming). Tardie was on the organizing committee of the 2021 experimental iteration of the Movement and Computing Conference\, lovingly termed Slo MoCo. They solely organized Temple University’s first Electronics Faire in 2024\, an annual event they continue to steward. Tardie currently manages a makerspace at Temple University Library’s Loretta C. Duckworth Scholars Studio. \nDerek: \nDerek Schwartz (he/him) is an audio engineer\, writer\, and technologist practicing the art of weaving networks. His values are rooted in DIY music culture\, and prior to coming to Philadelphia\, he spent time in St. Louis as a music writer and production assistant at KDHX Radio. In his current audio practice\, he produces\, mixes\, and records audio for film and music\, and creates experimental audio projects that play with waveforms\, radio\, and physical media. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Science in Music Technology at Temple University. \n

SUMMARY:First Friday: Carl Lee Multi Installation Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Cherry Street Pier’s February First Friday for Carl Lee’s multi installation video exhibit. The work Unity Island (2023) and Last House (2010). Both of these three-screen installations take a personal\, intimate approach to interpreting the built environment and how it changes over time. \nUnity Island (2023\, 3-channel 16mm film to digital projection\, 13:30 loop\, stereo sound) \nUnity Island is a landscape study of a ¼ mile stretch of land between Niagara River and Black Rock Canal at the border of Buffalo\, NY and Fort Erie\, Ontario. A railroad crosses the island from Canada to the US passing by a park visited by picnickers\, bicyclists\, and fishermen. Freight trains cross the canal lock via a swing bridge which rotates open for boats and the occasional freight ship. The 19th century infrastructure of railroad and swing bridge and the placid public park belie the island’s past as a garbage dump for the city of Buffalo. A hill\, from which you can get a 360° view of the island\, the city\, the river\, and the highway\, is located on the former site of the incineration plant. I’ve been taking my dog\, Augie\, for walks there for years. Time frames overlap and his in-the-moment wanderings act as a guide. \nLast House (2010\, 16:30 loop\, 3-channel projection\, stereo audio) \nWhen I first moved to Buffalo I was struck by the everyday beauty of the many single-family homes that make up a large part of the city. The iconic image of the house seemed to have endless variation\, each a unique instance with their own histories. If houses are containers for our memories\, the structures within which so many minor and major domestic events take place\, then each week in this city a collective amnesia grows block by block: a city disappears before our eyes. The demolition of these structures – by design or accident – and the speed\, indifference\, and violence with which it takes place; the transmutations of scale\, space\, and time – is breathtaking\, tragic\, and full of contradictions. Last House is an inquiry\, part document\, part memorial\, to this changing built environment. \nCarl Lee\, an early member of Termite TV\,  is a media artist living in Buffalo\, NY. SUMMARY:Amplifying the Undercurrent: Poetry & Essence Making
DESCRIPTION:This workshop was a guided experimentation  on the process of essence-making utilizing flowers and the natural environment — and poetry led by Dominique Matti. \nA flower essence is an energetic medicine intended to replicate a portion of the essential nature of a plant in a clear bowl of water. \nWhat is the essence of a fire pit? What is the essence of a view of the bridge or the breeze over the water? \nThe result were  physical essences that participants  both kept & shared\, and poetry on the various experiences participants have with what populates the immediate environment with inspiration from Black women poets. \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Termite TV Toolkit Release Party
DESCRIPTION:Termite TV Collective is excited to announce the print version of our Termite TV Toolkit: How to Make a Termite Show. \nThe Toolkit is meant for teachers and creative facilitators interested in integrating the Termite model of making thematic 30-minute\, multivocal shows in which multiple creators uniquely interpret one central theme. into their curriculum. \nTermite shows in the past have reflected on themes as malleable as water\, consumerism\, habits\, the war on terror\, and others. Show themes are designed to be spacious enough for artists to interpret them uniquely as a means of fostering creative dialogue around pressing social issues. Through individual expression radiating out from common themes\, Termite contributors co-create space for idea sharing and collective world-building. \nWe are interested in hosting this toolkit at your local library\, independent bookstores\, classrooms\, media institutions\, community organizing spaces and creative projects who could benefit from an outlined documented process of video and exhibit making that we like to call ‘video jazz.’ \nWe invite you to join us for the release of our Termite TV Toolkit on Friday\, December 6th from 6-8:00p : we’ll have copies available for sale and a communal packing station where we’ll pack\, stamp\, and sort copies to send out to the community. \nTo Order: \nIf you’re interested in a hard copy\, fill out our pre-order form for a copy for $10 and $5 shipping. Inquire for bulk order discount. \nFor a preview of the toolkit visit:  https://termite.org/mound/termite-tv-toolkit/

SUMMARY:First Friday: Gallery Opening with Lisa Marie and Deb Rudman
DESCRIPTION:Join us October 4\, 5pm – 8pm for the First Friday opening reception at Cherry Street Pier’s Studio 101. \nIn honor of American Archives Month\, Termite TV Collective will showcase work by Deb Rudman and Lisa Marie Patzer at Cherry Street Pier\, October 4-31. \nThe show features reflections on an archive of 35mm slides by photographer Ben Kabakow. The images Kabakow captured during the mid-1950’s reflect life in New York City and travels to popular tourist locations. Sample Portrait\, a video by Kabakow’s granddaughter Deb Rudman\, is an intimate portrait of Kabakow’s life\, relationships\, and love of photography. In Chromatographic Landscapes\, a series of prints and reverse-lit art panels\, Lisa Marie Patzer utilizes various digital chroma-based processes to sort\, separate out\, and reconfigure images from a collection of over a thousand 35mm slides. \nHer treatment of this large archive of analog imagery emphasizes the role nostalgia and personal association play when interpreting another’s visual anthology.
